Trauma Support Group

Beginning June 3, 2021, GSMYC is offering a Trauma Support Group. The group is designed for Hays County youth ages 12-17 who have experienced any kind of trauma. This is a 10-week group that will focus on developing coping skills and social skills, build self-esteem, and support the healing process.

A traumatic event is a frightening, dangerous, or violent event that poses a threat to a child’s life or bodily integrity. Witnessing a traumatic event that threatens life or physical security of a loved one can also be traumatic. This is particularly important for young children as their sense of safety depends on the perceived safety of their attachment figures (nctsn.org).

Experiences which might be traumatic:

  • Physical, sexual, or psychological abuse
  • Natural disasters
  • Community violence
  • Sudden or violent loss of a loved one or friend
  • Serious accidents
  • Witnessing interpersonal violence (domestic violence)
  • Substance use (personal or familial)
